• From Humble Beginnings to A Dream Realised

Berbice, Guyana (Gt Shoutout) – A young Guyanese is now part of the Class of 2025 at the Loma Linda University (LLU) School of Medicine. Nubi Yared Archer was last Thursday inducted among 200 first-year medical students at the university’s White Coat Ceremony. The ceremony was at held at the Coleman Pavilion, in California.

Yesterday I received my white coat and took the LLUSOM physician’s oath.

The 23-year-old hails from No. 42 Village on the West Coast of Berbice where he grew up with his mom and three siblings. His father was and still is residing in the U.S.

While living in Guyana, Archer attended the Seafield Primary and Mahaicony Secondary Schools, respectively. After completing his CSEC examinations, he traveled to Trinidad and Tobago where he commenced his undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of the Southern Caribbean.

This arrangement was short-lived, however, as Archer migrated to the U.S. in 2016. There, he continued his undergraduate studies at Oakwood University in Alabama. During his undergrad years, Archer spent his summer holidays interning at various universities, including Columbia University in New York and Georgetown University in Washington DC. These internships served as stepping stones on his journey towards becoming a medical doctor.

After graduating with his Bsc. in Biology in 2020, Nubi went on to sit the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and was successful. He then applied to several universities and, to his and his family’s elation, was accepted into the top-ranking university.

Archer will be spending the next four years working tediously to bring his dream to full fruition.

In 2014, a survey found that LLU ranked ahead of Ivy League schools like Princeton, Yale, and Harvard. According to College Evaluator (collegeevaluator.com), the average score of enrolled students at the California-based school is 508 while the average GPA is 3.83.

“I guess some dreams do come through… honored and thankful,” was the lad’s comment as he flashed his student ID on his social media status.
