Daniela Araujo is one of Guyana’s youngest and most popular Writers and Poets.
She comes to gtmemoirs.com with an unwavering drive to address issues and topics that Guyanese society has made Guyanese suppress…
The 21-year-old Writer, Poet, and Spoken-word Artist aim to break down barriers to open expressions through her writing.
The National Youth Poet has been a voice for our country… an inspiration to other young creatives like herself and the Indigenous community. She was a part of the star-studded team that represented Guyana at the World Expo in Dubai in 2021.
Refusing to rest her laurels, the young writer will now be writing columns focused on real issues surrounding Guyanese women, youth, Indigenous people, and more.
Her new column, “Written Expressions by Daniela Araujo – From my POV,” aims to normalize conversations relating to issues concerning women, the youth, and our first peoples. Issues are rarely if ever openly discussed here in Guyana.
BRINGING LIGHT TO ISSUES RELATING TO THESE TOPICS
“There are so many issues that we face from day to day that we are too afraid to speak on because of our youth, sexual orientation, or because ethnicity.
We will be judged for it, but not addressing these issues means that they’ll remain issues.
It is okay to talk about politics, sex, and other controversial topics on social media but to talk about the injustices of an indigenous person or the mental state of a young man, at some point you’ll receive a backlash, which is okay because as humans, we all differ and so are our opinions but these are things that we rarely speak about in Guyana and when we do, enough is never said,” Daniela Araujo.
Her Writing
Daniela, through her writing and poetry, has been an advocate for social and other related issues. She stopped voicing her opinions and addressing issues because of society’s narrow perspective of topics that should and shouldn’t be addressed, she stated, “I realised that it’s okay if they don’t agree with me, what’s important and what’s my right, is for me to share my opinions, openly.”
The spoken-word artist further added “it doesn’t matter how deeply these issues may stir and stimulate us, they become human for us only when we can discuss them openly… We humanize what is going on in the world and ourselves only by speaking of it, and in the course of speaking of it we learn to be human and we learn to take the right approach.”
The young woman is hoping to create a change and encourage people to be more open to discussing topics that society deems taboo. Daniela’s columns will be published on our website ‘gtmemoirs.com‘ every Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The Indigenous poet is well known by the Guyanese public for her performances at many national events, she has also won several prizes for her poetry and writing.
Daniela was recently offered a scholarship from the University of West Indies, the scholarship aims to strengthen the professionalization of the cultural heritage and creative industries, she’ll be studying Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation.
HER FAVOURITE QUOTE
“By letting your light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same”
Her advice to other young people is “Work smart and be consistent with your goals, your only competition in life is the person in the mirror, the person you were yesterday. Be kind and shine your light everywhere you go because I’ve learned that people may not always remember your name but they’ll always remember what you did, how you did it, and how it made them feel.”
