DJ Kash, born Courtney George, is a Guyanese-American DJ and Recording Artiste. Kash first gained prominence deejaying and then transitioned into recording music.
The name KASH was given to him by a High School girlfriend, an indirect reference to his always wearing the latest expensive name brand clothes.
DJ Kash was quick to state that he didn’t like the name at first, but with time and the fact that the name grew on him, he began writing that name on his records every time he would go to a record store to buy music.
DJ Kash grew up in a music family. His father was a famous Dj during the 1980s playing for Blue Ribbon Sound System. He would eventually learn from his father and older cousins, who were also Deejays.
Today, the deejay is considered one of the best Guyanese, globally. Starting his professional career at the age of 14 years of age.
My love and interest in music started when I was 7 years of age. I was always listening to music and memorising lyrics, said DJ Kash.
His deejaying career started in theĀ Jamaican Dancehall community in New York in 1999. He subsequently started playing music in the Guyanese community in 2010. With this came love from his newfound fans and promoters, as well as from those who hated him.
DJ Kash is famously referred to as one of the most talented Guyanese Deejay who has ever lived in the USA.
He started winning Sound Clash trophies in 2012 and currently holds five. He now mentors young and upcoming Djs.
As of February 2022, he has released six songs, of which, “Real Bad Guyanese” which features Guyanese Gaddie G, is considered his best release.
The DJ/Artiste is also the owner of the Real Bad Guyanese Clothing line.
One of DJ Kash’s most celebrated accomplishments is the fact that he became famous in the Dancehall and not on mainstream radio or from joining a well-known sound system.
DJ Kash is intentionally targeting the Caribbean Music Market, with an eye on the fast-growing global music market.
His weekly Facebook Live Shows which airs weekly helps to keep his global fans entertained.
He stressed that deejaying comes first. Recognising that he can sing and write, made him start doing both.
For DJ Kash, being in a one-man army comes with many challenges. The slow expansion of his clothing line is one of his many projects to suffer from this.
The favourite of his six songs is “Badmind.” He said he loves that one because he’s telling a story related to his own life… people hate him because of his talent.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, DJ Kash would travel to Guyana, almost every quarter for events.
The former NYU hospital worker has been working in music full-time for the past three years.
