Western Scientific Company Ltd. donates $2M to First Lady’s Menstrual Hygiene Initiative

Western Scientific Company Limited (WSCL) recently donated $2M to the Office of Guyana’s First Lady Mrs. Arya Ali. The sum will go towards the First Lady’s Menstrual Hygiene Initiative launched in January 2021.

The cheque was handed over to Mrs. Ali at her Office located at the first family’s official residence, State House.

President of WSCL, Mr. Edwin Mackoon said he is happy to be a donor to this excellent initiative which can be life-changing for many young women across the country’s hinterland regions where such supplies are scarce.

“As the First Lady said, menstruation is not a choice and leads to many young girls dropping out of school, not only in Guyana but around the world, due to their inability to afford or access sanitary items. Being able to do our part in ensuring our girls are able to attain the highest possible education and achieve their dreams and ambitions, is an honour,” Mr. Mackoon said.

The Menstrual Hygiene Initiative is aimed at ending “period poverty.” In the first instance, sanitary pads will be provided to Secondary Schools across the hinterland regions.
