GPHC Emergency Room: A Testament to Compassion and Professionalism
—
Dear Editor,
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Emergency Room deserves commendation for its outstanding commitment to care and professionalism. Recently, I had the opportunity to experience this firsthand during a medical emergency, and I feel compelled to share my reflections with your readers.
Amid the criticisms often directed at public institutions, it is important to highlight the positives. I was deeply impressed by the level of service provided by the staff, particularly by Dr. Jacobs, a young female physician. She treated me with care, courtesy, and exceptional thoroughness, ensuring I felt reassured in a challenging moment. Beyond her exemplary patient care, Dr. Jacobs also demonstrated professionalism by mentoring two young interns, striking a perfect balance between treatment and teaching.
During my five-hour stay, I observed a diverse cross-section of Guyanese society—people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds—seeking medical attention. What stood out most was the dignity and compassion with which every patient was treated. Despite the varying temperaments and circumstances of those in need, the staff consistently upheld professionalism and empathy.
This experience reminded me of the Guyana we all aspire to—a nation where differences fade and unity prevails, with everyone working together to provide care and save lives.
I was also impressed by the improvements in GPHC’s systems. The computerization of patient records has significantly sped up the processing of returning patients. Emergencies are treated with urgency, and despite limited staff and space, the team operates efficiently to prioritise care. While there is always room for improvement, the progress made so far is undeniable and worthy of recognition.
To the management and staff of GPHC, as well as the Ministry of Health, I offer my gratitude and commendation. Your dedication to enhancing public healthcare serves as a powerful example of what we can achieve when we work together with respect and compassion.
This is the Guyana I dream of—a nation united in service, where every individual is valued. I hope we all find the will to work towards this vision in every aspect of our lives.
Sincerely,
Russel Lancaster
