Wisroc, Linden (Gtmemoirs) – Imagine one day celebrating Dr. Walter Anthony Rodney, in the capacity of National Hero of Guyana.
Imagine hearing our voices united in celebration of the National Heroes of Guyana. Who should we celebrate and why?
WAR wrote that “for the only great men among the unfree and the oppressed are those who struggle to destroy the oppressor.” How about us starting with those Guyanese who have struggled to destroy the oppressors of Guyanese?
Dr. Walter Anthony Rodney would have been 79 years old on March 23rd, 2021. He was a Guyanese academic, historian and political activist, who was assassinated on June 13th, 1980 in Georgetown, Guyana.
Like with him, we continue to daily assassinate the history of our National Heroes, by not recognising how their sacrifices have continued to ensuring that Guyanese have a beloved home in Guyana.
Writing in the Guyana Chronicle about WAR, Dr. David Hinds stated “Rodney exemplified a broadened role for the intellectual in Guyanese and Caribbean society. For him, the intellectual must put herself and himself at the service of the people by becoming immersed in the popular struggle for freedom” – Walter Rodney: A Guyanese and Caribbean legacy.
