First Miss and Mister Independence Queen and King crowned.
-Lokono Boy Cops Title
As part of Guyana’s 56th Independence celebration, the first-ever Miss and Mister Guyana Independence Pageant crowned its first queen and king on Sunday, May 28th.
The Pageant which was held at the Theatre Guild Playhouse in Kingston, Georgetown, saw 9 delegates, graced the stage with talent, poise, confidence, elegance and hopes of copping the crown.
+ However, it was Kayla King and Calvin Roberts also known as the “The Lokono Boy” who wowed the judges and emerged as Miss and Mister Guyana Independence respectfully.
The coronation night saw the delegates competing in various segments which included the Evening Wear, the presentation of Independence, the Costume Competition and the Answer and Question segment.
The preliminaries also included the peoples choice award and the survival challenge.
Kayla King captured the prizes for best costume, best evening wear and best colour representation.
Her evening wear was designed by no other than local designer, Quinton Pearson and her costume was a masterpiece designed by the one and only Randy Madray.
The newly crowned queen stated that the journey has definitely not been easy and she faced many challenges along the way, however she persevered and conquered.
Miss King who is no stranger to pageantry, stated that pageantry has helped her boost her self confidence.
The 19 year old competed in the Miss Guyana Teen Scholarship Pageant in 2021 and placed second runner up.
This is definitely just the beginning for Kayla as she intends on forging ahead in pageantry in the future.
Calvin Roberts also captured several prizes which includes best introduction, best evening wearing, best answer in the intelligent segment, and Mr. Congeniality.
His evening wear was also a work piece of designer Quinton Pearson.
The young indigenous man stated he is proud to be crowned the first ever Mister Guyana Independence and moreso proud to be representing his indigenous people and being a voice.
Mister Roberts stated that by being apart of the pageant he received backlash from a few persons because of the stereotypes attached to males taking part in pageantry. Nevertheless he was determined to take the crown home, and ‘Lokono Boy’ did exactly that for his people.
Roberts was the only indigenous person in the pageant and was grateful to have received support from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and his other sponsors.
Calvin is also the proprietor of “Calvin’s Indigenous Cuisines” which a business that provides you with all your cravings and needs for indigenous cuisines.
The King and Queen who are both from region number three, are already making plans on how they can give back to their region and Guyana as a whole, their projects will of course be supported by the pageant and its franchise holder Meleesa Payne.
